About TACMIN
TACMIN is an intermingling of English, Japanese, and Vietnamese meanings that perfectly reflects the company’s vision. In English, TACMIN is the acronym for Traditional Artisan Craft Movement with Initiatives and Network, while in Japanese it rhymes with “takumi” meaning extraordinary skill in creating beautiful objects. In Vietnamese, TACMIN combines “tac” meaning “to make” and “minh” meaning “fine.” TACMIN is the first step to realizing the vision to connect Vietnam, Japan, and the rest of the world through traditional artisan crafts.

Background
Traditional crafts have long been part of the people’s daily activities. While traditional crafts developed in many ways in response to the needs of market and society, they have been raised to the level of art due to their makers’ artistic skills and the profound cultural expressions they display. Recently, however, any traditional crafts have disappeared from everyday life as a result of a mismatch with the needs of contemporary lifestyles. With crafts having been reduced to mere souvenirs or display items harking back on eras past, the importance of craft-making skills and craftspersons has slowly diminished and production areas have either disappeared or shrunk.

In Vietnam where TACMIN is based, there are only more than 2,000 craft villages from ________ ten years ago. These villages, which employ more than a million people, continue to face critical issues in a rapidly changing environment. Decline in traditional skills and values, lack of successors, limited market, and increased competition are only a few of the issues besetting the sector.

Objectives
TACMIN aspires for a future wherein artisan crafts will be used again in daily life, appreciated by society and their traditional values intact over time, and wherein craftspeople have better quality of life and enhanced opportunities to perfect their craft. Toward this end, TACMIN intends to support all activities that would help realize its vision for the sector. It also aims to build a network to include those who share the same vision and the following objectives:

1. To play a pioneering role in artisan craft making in Vietnam by producing competitive products with stronger identity as a Vietnamese handicraft, one that matches contemporary society, reflective of traditional values, and produced by native craft-making skills using locally available materials;

2. To conduct research on the history of Vietnamese artisan crafts, background of craft making, skills of craftspersons, and activities in craft villages, among others. With this, it is intended to contribute to strengthening the knowledge base and policy formulation in Vietnam’s artisan craft sector; and

3. To build a network of people and organizations involved in the craft sector both I Vietnam and overseas through the consolidation and dissemination of information that will be collected in the process of pursuing the above objectives and through interchanges with others.
