Activities:Support to Human Resource Development
Sustainability of Vietnamese artisan crafts are being threatened due to various reasons such as change in life style the people in villages and society as a whole, aging of master artisans and lack of successors. Traditional skills are decaying and many villages lack updated market information and management capacity. TACMIN intends to provide a support to capacity building of the craft villages and craft persons through consultation and training for self-sustained growth and inheritance of traditional values.


Achievements
Preparation of Design Guidebook to Promote Design Activities (2002-2003): Concept of design is not limited to aesthetic beauty but involves much wider aspects including cultural value, ease of use, competitiveness in the market, among others. In order to facilitate understanding and common recognition of “design” a “design guidebook” was prepared by supervision of experts which explains plainly the definition of design and process of product development. Seminars were organized to discuss the draft design guidebook with participation of various design experts, academics and related private sector.

Training for Ethnic Minorities on Accounting and Product Development Capacity Improvement (2002-2003): Most of the minority groups being engaged in craft production lack ability on product development, management and marketing without proper pricing and bargaining power. A program was implemented to improve business management skills and development of matching products to the prevailing markets in Dala Cau Village in Lai Chau Province of Red Mon ethnic minority located in the northern mountain area and Van Giao Village in An Gian Province of Khumer ethnic minority in Mekong Delta.

Production Skills Upgrading Program for Master Artisans in Wood Carving and Rattan and Bamboo Crafts (2002-2003): Due to aging of master artisans and lack of young successors fine skills inherited over several hundreds years are being lost in many traditional craft villages. In order to promote fostering young craft persons a skill upgrading program was implemented wherein master artisan provide young candidates with a technical specification of target crafts and training in craft association and training school. At the end of the program the products made by young candidates were exhibited and commented.

Management Capacity Upgrading Program for Craft SME Managers (2002-2003): Craft production in rural areas is mostly made by households or small enterprises who suffer from unstable management due to their passive manner in doing business. A program was designed based on the know-how on production and management process of Japanese experience for oeners and managers the small to medium size enterprises engaged in bamboo and rattan as well as woodcarving in Hatay and Quang Nam Provinces in northern and central Vietnam, respectively.
